Diner Hostages Day One

May 19, 2003

Nora: Ok.

Flash: So, where would you like to sit?

Nora: I'm not picky, but Matthew's favorite seat is by the window, so let's sit there.

Flash: Sounds good to me.

Nora: Oh, by the way, it's official -- you're Matthew's favorite babysitter.

Flash: Hey, I just let him pick the video.

Nora: Oh, yeah, well, it has nothing to do with the fact that you're a rock star and all.

Flash: Oh, yeah, right.

Nora: "Oh, yeah, right." He is so excited. he can't stop talking about the fact that you're going to give him guitar lessons. oh, he's already picked out his rock name -- Smash.

Flash: He is such a great kid.

Nora: Thanks. So are you.

Flash: You know, don't even worry, because I'm completely going to pay you back for letting me stay with you as soon as I start singing again, so --

Nora: Are you kidding? You got Matthew to bed on time. That's payment enough.

Flash: Yeah, but you've done a lot for me. I mean, looking over that recording contract? People charge for stuff like that.

Nora: They do? I should send you a bill.

Flash: Yeah, I swear, I'm so going to pay that back --

Nora: I'm joking, Flash. I'm joking.

Flash: Oh, I'm sorry.

Nora: That's ok. Anybody who doesn't get a lawyer joke is ok in my book. Ney -- stop talking about paying me back. Don't worry about it.

Flash: I'm going to get you tickets. That is, I hope, if my band plays at R.J. Gannon's new club, Ultra Violet.

Nora: Where I'm sure you will be a big, huge hit. And I actually happen to have a little pull with R.J., so maybe I'll see what I can do to make that happen.

Cole: Stay right where you are.

Natalie: Dude, what's your problem?

Cole: I don't have a problem. You do. all right, people, you know what this is! Stay where you are and do what you're told, and no one gets hurt!

Marcie: Oh, my God. Oh, my God!

Cole: Everybody, empty out your pockets. Put your cash, your wallet, and your jewelry -- now.

Flash: You're kidding, right?

Cole: Does it look like I'm kidding? Do it now! That means you, too!

Nora: Just do as he says, everybody. Do as he says. He doesn't want to hurt anyone, do you?

Cole: Be smart, listen to the woman, and we'll all be home in time for the 11:00 news.

Carlotta: Come on, come on, come on.

*~*

[Music plays]

Cole: There. nice and cozy.

Nora: Why don't you just take what you want and let's just get this over with.

[Phone rings]

Cole: Answer it.

[Ring]

Cole: Do something stupid this time and somebody dies. I pick who.

[Ring]

Carlotta: Diner.

Antonio: Mami?

Carlotta: Tonio --

Antonio: Did you just call me? Mami?

Carlotta: Yes, yes, I did.

Antonio: Well, why did you hang up?

Carlotta: Because -- uh -- I lost the signal. You know how cell phones are.

Antonio: Oh, so everything's ok?

Carlotta: Of course. Everything's's fine.

Antonio: Ok, well, did you want to talk to me about something?

Carlotta: I just wanted to say hello, you know, see how you're doing. I haven't seen you in so long.

Antonio: What are you talking about? I was just there.

Carlotta: I miss you, mijo.

Antonio: Mami, is everything all right? Look, if it's not, answer me in Spanish.

Carlotta: Todo esta bien, Mijo. I have to go.

Antonio: Mami --

Carlotta: I have customers. I'll talk to you later.

Cle: What the hell was with the Spanish?

Carlotta: I said, "everything is fine." that's what "todo esta bien" means.

Cole: I need a big garbage bag.

Nora: It's all right. Get out a garbage bag, Carlotta. he just wants to take all the stuff that he stole from us and put it in there, and then he's going to leave, and that'll be the end of it, right?

Cole: Give me the bag, mami.

Marcie: You didn't put your engagement ring on the table.

Natalie: Because I wasn't wearing it, was I?

Marcie: Oh, God, Natalie. I know we've never been friends, but I'm really, really scared.

Natalie: Look, don't worry, all right?

Marcie: What if he gets mad? What if he starts shooting?

Natalie: Ok, just -- sit down, sit down. it's going to be fine, ok? Everything's going to be fine, guys. Just -- just do what he says.

Flash: How can you be so calm?

Natalie: I don't know if I am calm, ok? I just -- I've been through worse.

Flash: Yeah? Like what?

Natalie: Oh, like being strapped to a table and your grandfather ready to cut your heart out.

Flash: Oh. Yeah, you got me beat, then. Never mind.

Natalie: Right. he's dead, so we just -- we need to calm down because we're going to get through this. Everything's going to be ok.

Flash: Yeah, you keep telling yourself that.

Marcie: I will. I think -- I think I'm going to tell myself that. I'm going to tell myself that over and over and over again. Everything's going to be all right. Everything's going to be all right.

Cole: Move it.

*~*

Cole: Empty the register.

[Music plays]

Al: Sometimes life makes you a little desperate. Your back's against the wall so long, you think you'll never get free. That's when you got to have faith, stay strong. Believe me, you'll make it. I've been there.

Cole: Ok, mami, let's go. No, no, no, wait. get in the kitchen, all of you.

Nora: What for?

Cole: Just shut up and get in there.

Marcie: Oh, God.

Flash: Calm down, calm down. It's all right, ok?

Marcie: No, no. I know what's going to happen next. This is where we all get shot, just like in "L.A. Confidential"!

Nora: Nobody's going to get shot. He's not that stupid. Nobody ever got lethal injection for committing robbery.

Cole: I'm not getting anything.

Nora: No, you're not. That's right, because you're going to take what you got already and you're going to leave here without looking back, right?

Cole: You think you got me all figured, don't you? Maybe I got other plans. Maybe I'm not leaving here by myself. Maybe there's more to this than you think.

Nora: Like what?

Cole: Like maybe mami is coming with me.

[Music plays]

Cole: What do you say, mami? You want to go on a little trip?

Nora: You're not going to get very far dragging a woman along.

Cole: She looks like she's got pretty strong legs.

Nora: Oh, why don't you just take the money and get out of here.

Cole: Uh-uh. Money's not going to cover the kind of debt that Vega owes me. Come on.

Cole: Night-night, ladies. it's been a real pleasure and all that. everybody down!

Carlotta: Oh! Oh!

Cole: Move! nobody move.

Cole: Stupid cop's still there. You see what you did? You see?

[Carlotta gasps]

*~*

[Music plays]

Nora: Ok, so, what now?

Cole: Everybody just shut up and don't move. As long as that cop's out there, we do nothing.

[Phone rings]

Carlotta: Should I get it?

Cole: No.

[Cole turns off radio]

[Ring]

Natalie: How are you feeling?

Carlotta: Not so good.

Natalie: What's wrong?

Carlotta: I guess I'm just frightened, I guess. It's hard to breathe, and my arm feels strange. It feels a little sore.

[Ring]

Natalie: You know, for God's sake, can you just take the money and slip out the back? I mean, the cop's not going to see you and we're not going to say anything. Just leave!

[Phone stops ringing]

Nora: I am a lawyer. I'm the Assistant District Attorney, as a matter of fact.

Cole: So what?

Nora: So I know what I'm talking about. If you take this and turn it into some sort of hostage crisis, it's not going to help your case. It's not going to give you leniency. It won't be a slap on the wrist. As a matter of fact, it takes it to an entirely different ball game, especially if you already have a record of any kind.

Cole: What, you'll let me off easy if I let them all go? Get the D.A. to go along with it?

Nora: That's right. I'm the best chance you've got right now. So don't do it. Don't take this next step.

Cole: Shut up. she's the one who dragged Antonio Vega into this.

[Phone rings]

Cole: Who is it?

Antonio: This is Detective Antonio Vega. Who is this?

Cole: Your old buddy. how you doing, Vega?

Antonio: I'm good, Cole. Question is, how are you?

Cole: Hey, man, I'm just sitting back, enjoying some fine Puerto Rican cuisine.

Antonio: Everyone ok in there?

Cole: Get rid of the cops out front.

Antonio: Look, why don't you let everyone go, and you and I can sit down and we can talk this out.

Cole: Don't start giving me orders, Vega. I'm calling the shots here, you got that?

Antonio: Just calm down.

Cole: Don't tell me to calm down. Get up. I got a room full of women in here, including your mama.

Antonio: Ok, let me -- let me talk to her.

Carlotta: Hello?

Antonio: Mami, are you ok? Has he hurt anyone?

Carlotta: I'm ok. But he has a gun.

Cole: You got that, Vega? So you're going to listen to me. You're going to do what I say. Otherwise I'll kill them all.

*~*

Hank: I'm getting tired of scotch.

Bo: Well, then, why you order it?

Hank: Because I always do.

Bo: Yeah, but if you don't like it --

Hank: I do like it. It's just that I'm getting tired of doing the same old thing all the time.

Bo: I think somebody needs a vacation.

Hank: I don't think that's going to work for me.

[Phone rings]

Bo: Buchanan. he did? Hh, great, great. I'll -- I'll call him back. Thank you. Matthew called me.

Hank: Oh, good.

Bo: Hey, there, buddy. it's Bo. I heard that you called my office?

Matthew: I got an A on my project.

Bo: You're kidding me. You got an A on your project? That's terrific. What was the project about?

Matthew: Charles Lindbergh. Remember that day when me and my mom went to Washington and you told me to be sure to see his airplane?

Bo: Yeah, I remember that.

Matthew: I wrote a whole page about seeing it.

Bo: And you got an A. Man, that is just so cool.

Matthew: My dad would've been proud, right?

Bo: Yeah. Yeah, he sure would've been.

Matthew: Do you think he could see it from way up in heaven?

Bo: See what, champ?

Matthew: My A?

Bo: Yes, yes, he can definitely see it. I'm positive, and I'll bet your mom was real proud of it when she saw it, too, huh?

Matthew: She's not home yet. She was supposed to be, but she's not.

Bo: But Marianne's there with you, right?

Matthew: Yeah. She's taking me to my sleepover now.

Bo: Oh, great. Ok, well, listen, you have a good time at that sleepover, and I want to thank you for calling me and telling me. We'll talk soon, all right? Congratulations again on that A.

Matthew: Thanks.

Hank: That kid is really starting to get to you, huh?

Bo: Yeah. yeah, he really does.

[Phone rings]

Bo: This thing never stops, huh?

[Hank chuckles]

Hank: I feel your pain.

Bo: Buchanan. yeah, ok. We'll get on it. we got to get going. Something's going down.

 *~*

Antonio: Look, I'm the one you're after, all right? Your business is with me. No reason to take it out on a bunch of innocent women.

Cole: Why not?

Antonio: I'll come in, unarmed. You let everyone go.

Cole: And then what? You come in and start sweating me about how bad I am and how perfect you are? Not interested.

Antonio: No. no, we'll sit down. We'll have a cup of coffee. We'll talk everything out.

Cole: You're not a bargaining chip, but your mami, on the other hand -- what do I want? Hmm. A car, 50 g's in small bills. Yeah, right. and then I'll release the hostages.

Antonio: All of them?

Cole: Yeah, except for one. I'll hold on to her until I'm sure I'm safe. Make it happen. Call me back.

Antonio: Ah.

[Phone beeps]

Cristian: Antonio?

Antonio: What?

Cristian: Natalie's at the diner.

Antonio: You got to be kidding me. Nice move, kid. All right -- uh -- write it down. Write it all down.

Bo: What's going on?

Antonio: We got a hostage situation at the diner.

Hank: Is your mother there?

Antonio: Yeah. Cole Avery's holding several hostages. Natalie found a way to get a text message to Cris.

Bo: "Nora, Carlotta, Natalie, Marcie, Flash."

Hank: What's a Flash?

Antonio: An Angel Square kid.

Cristian: Natalie says that he's got a gun and he's alone.

Hank: What's he asking for?

Antonio: 50 grand, a car, and he says he'll keep a hostage until he feels he's safe.

Bo: Tell him what he wants to hear. Tell him we're putting it all together right now. Just buy us some time.

Antonio: I was getting ready to call a negotiator.

Bo: Ok, I'll do that. How much do you know about Cole Avery's family?

Antonio: You're up to bat, bro. I need you to do something for me fast.

Cristian: Sure. What?

Antonio: I'll fill you in on the way out.

Bo: This is commissioner Buchanan. We have a hostage situation. I need a negotiator.

*~*

Nora: You're in over your head, Mr. Cole.

Cole: You just love the sound of your  own voice, don't you?

Nora: It's not too late. You're just in it for the money. You don't want to hurt anyone.

Cole: You should quit being a lawyer. You'd make a bundle being a psychic.

Nora: Don't let things get out of hand. Don't -- don't be -- let yourself get put in a position where you're forced to do something that you're going to regret for the rest of your life.

Cole: My whole life's been one big, long regret, lady. Why change now?

Marcie: I have to go to the bathroom.

Cole: Forget it.

Marcie: I can't. When I get scared and nervous, my bladder gets weak --

Cole: Shut up.

Marcie: I have to go to the bathroom!

[Phone rings]

Cole: What is it? Talk.

Antonio: We're arranging for the $50,000 and the car. Should be here in about an hour.

Cole: Get it from the place where you guys keep all the bribe money you take.

Cole: What, you're negotiating with me? I thought we had this all settled, Vega.

Antonio: Look, you're getting what you want. Why don't you just let one of them go?

Cole: No, no. You listen to me! You're giving me what I want, or I'll start killing them!

Cole: Hey, miss I-got-to-pee, what's your name?

Marcie: If you let me pee, I'll tell you.

Cole: Are there any windows in the bathroom? Don't be lying to me. You got a phone?

Marcie: No.

Cole: Let me see. All right. You can go, but don't even think about being a hero. Otherwise, I shoot mamacita. you got it?

Marcie: Yeah. yeah, yeah, I got it!

Cole: Where's that redhead?

Natalie: Right here.

Flash: He's out.

Natalie: All right, we got to -- we got to find the gun. Where's the gun?

Nora: Ok, get the gun, but get the keys.

Flash: It's got to be somewhere underneath him.

Nora: We got to get the keys so we can get out of --

Flash: It's got to be somewhere underneath him.

Marcie: Oh, my God. Did you kill him? I got some stuff from the bathroom.

Nora: What stuff?

Marcie: I don't know, weapon kind of stuff.

Nora: Jeez -- ok. Great. Perfect. Save it.

Marcie: I found it on the floor.

Nora: Ok. Just put it away for now. We'll deal with it --

Flash: Ah -- got the keys.

Nora: Ok!

Natalie: All right. Help me turn him over.

Flash: All right. Let's go. Ok.

Natalie: Two, three -- oh!

Flash: Oh, my God.

Cole: Everybody get back! That was a real dumb thing to do.

Natalie: Give it yourself hot shot.

Cole: Aren't you the brave little girl.

Natalie: You know what? The cops are going to come and get you soon. And if they get you for murder, you're going to fry like a catfish.

Cole: Shut up. This is all your fault, mami. you hear me? All your fault!

Natalie: You're the one who's in here robbing her diner!

Cole: No, no, no. She's the one who called Antonio. I ought to just shoot the lot of you.

Natalie: Go ahead.

Marcie: Natalie --

Cole: Shut your yap. I got major, major problems here.

Flash: Yeah? Well, what do you think we've got?

Cole: No, no. I'm in deep. I got to climb my way out. All it was going to take was one score -- one simple, stupid, little score. But no. Vega's brother had to screw it up. Your sons give me nothing but grief, and I'm sick and tired of it!

Carlotta: Well, I'm sick and tired of it, too! You think you can come in here and just take my money and terrify my customers?

Cole: I know I can. I'm doing it.

Carlotta: Fine! Then go ahead, take your money and -- and get out of my diner. Just go away as far as --

Natalie: Mrs. Vega? Mrs. Vega?

Flash: Mrs. Vega! Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.

[Carlotta groans]

*~*

Bo: What's going on?

Officer: He hasn't tried to make contact.

Antonio: Has he hurt anybody?

Officer: Can't tell with the blinds closed.

Antonio: Gunshots?

Officer: No.

Antonio: Give me these.

Bo: Take it easy, Antonio. I want you to get a-hold of Barnes. Tell him I want a command center set up right here with a direct line into the diner.

Officer: Yes, sir.

Bo: You see anything, Antonio?

Antonio: No, it's impossible. It's too dark. Damn it.

*~*

Nora: Call Antonio. Tell him we need a doctor. Are you deaf? This woman needs medical attention! Call a doctor!

Cole: Hang up that phone right now.

Flash: Look, she's sick.

Cole: Give me the phone!

Flash: Oh -- whatever.

Natalie: No more.

Cole: Stop right there.

Natalie: Fine. Fine. If you don't want to do it, you let me go out there and get some help, or you call and get it yourself.

Cole: Yeah. Or?

Natalie: Or you can shoot me in the back because I'm not going to stand there while she is lying on the floor.

Cole: Miss D.A., You make the call, and everybody else get over there where I can see you.

[Phone rings]

Nora: Hello?

Antonio: Nora?

Nora: Antonio, we need help.

Antonio: What is it?

Nora: It's your mother. It's bad.

Antonio: What? What did he do to her?

Nora: Nothing, nothing. Uh -- she's having chest pains. I think it might be a heart attack.

Antonio: Oh, my God.

Nora: We need a doctor now.

Marcie: It's going to be ok, Mrs. Vega.

Flash: Yeah, everything's going to be all right. Don't worry.

Natalie: Todo esta bien, Mrs. Vega. Estoy aqui.

Carlotta: Mija.

*~*

Hank: Thanks.

Officer: Ok.

[Phone rings]

Cole: Where's my money?

Antonio: Not yet. Look, I'm sending in a doctor to examine my mother.

Cole: He bringing a doctor's bag?

Antonio: He's unarmed.

Cole: He better be.

Cole: Let me see your hands. Where the hell are my keys? Give me my damn keys. try it again. Just try it again.

Natalie: Look, Mrs. Vega, it's going to be ok. The doctor's here, ok?

Cole: Give me the bag. Get in. Come on.

Cole: Turn around.

Troy: Is there anyone else hurt?

Nora: No, we're fine. Carlotta's the one that needs you.

Cole: What are you waiting for?

Troy: Mrs. Vega? it's Dr. MacIver. How you feeling? You having any pain?

Carlotta: Feels like someone's standing on my chest. Hard to breathe.

Troy: Ok. I want you to try, though, ok? I want you to try and take a deep breath for me.

[Carlotta groans]

Carlotta: What is it?

Troy: I don't know. I'm not sure just yet. I need to get you to a hospital. You feeling any pressure on your chest?

Carlotta: Dios mio. It's -- it's a heart attack, isn't it?

Troy: We don't know ok. I just want you to stay calm. Stay calm for me, all right? I need to get this woman to a hospital.

Cole: No one's going anywhere.

Troy: She may be having a heart attack.

Cole: So fix her.

Troy: I can't fix here right here. I have to get her to a hospital.

Cole: No one's going anywhere till I get my car and my money!

Troy: Mrs. Vega? Two aspirin for you, ok? I want you to chew these and then swallow.

Marcie: Look at all that blood.

Flash: Yeah. It's too bad we all didn't smash him.

Natalie: What's the matter, Cole? I didn't hit you that hard.

Cole: Shut up.

Natalie: Ok. but, you know, you do look like you're not feeling all that well. Right?

Nora: Troy, do you have something in your bag that you could give to Mr. Cole to help his pain?

Cole: Yeah, right, like you really care.

Nora: I care about the well-being of everyone in this diner.

Cole: I should've known.

Nora: Listen, the worse you feel, the worse you treat us, and you didn't start out the day by being Mary Poppins. You know what I mean?

Cole: Very funny.

Nora: Troy, do you have something that you can give him for his pain?

Natalie: Yes. Might put us all in a better mood.

[Phone rings]

Cole: What?

Antonio: It's me.

Cole: Where's my car and my money?

Antonio: It's on its way, 15 minutes tops.

Cole: What the hell is taking so long?

Antonio: It'll be here. But right now I got someone who wants to talk to you.

Woman: Cole? tell me it's not true, honey. tell me you're not doing what they say you're doing.

Cole: Mom. What are you -- what the hell are you doing here, mom? Damn you, Vega.

Cole: Where the hell is that aspirin?

Troy: Right here. Just relax, take it easy. they're right here.

Cole: Let me see that bottle.

Troy: All right, sure.

[Phone rings]

Cole: You're wasting your time, Vega. Send my mother away. I'm not going to see her.

Troy: Mrs. Vega, how you doing?

[Carlotta groans]

Carlotta: Something's wrong. I'm scared.
