Chapter Twenty Six:
Nora was jolted awake by the commotion next door. She ran into the room and immediately froze. Everyone was talking at once. A nurse finally noticed her standing there.
“What happened?”
“His heart stopped for a few minutes. We were able to bring him back and the resident on duty is working to stabilize him.”
“Why—what happened? They told me—“
Just then Troy walks in still putting his shirt on, definitely in need of a shave, with obvious bed head. (okay Trace that was the best way I could fit it in there)
“Alright people, talk to me. What’s going…”
“No way! You’re not touching him, Troy.”
“Nora calm down.”
“Don’t tell me to calm down. I don’t want you touching him Troy! Where’s Larry? Larry’s his doctor!”
“Larry’s on his way, but Nora, you need to calm down and let me do my job. (he approaches her, and touches her arm)
“Don’t touch me!”
Larry walks in…
“Larry, you have to do something! Take over! You’re his doctor, not Troy! Ow! I don’t—I don’t want—(grabs her stomach) Ow! Larry—oh God, what’s happening?”
“Nora you need to calm down! You’re cramping!”
“Oh God…”
“Nora, calm down and breathe. You need to calm down for the baby.”
Troy’s head snapped around when he heard what Larry said. A look of sadness crossed his face.
Nora walked towards Bo’s bed but was overcome with another pain and passed out. Troy picked her up and carried her next door.
“Somebody page Dr. Conklin, now!” he yelled as he walked out the door.
Troy quickly hooked her up to the monitors. She was cramping really bad and they needed to work to stop it before she lost the baby.
Nora came to a few minutes later. She quickly sat up when she saw Troy approach her with a syringe.
“No! No needles.”
“Nora, it’s for the baby. We’ve got to stop the cramping.”
“I don’t believe you. Where’s Dr. Conklin?”
“She’s on her way, Nora. Please believe me. I’d never hurt you or the baby. You’re baby’s survival depends on it.”
Nora nodded. Troy was just about to administer the medication when Dr. Conklin walked in.
“What’s going on, Nora?”
“I guess I got a bit stressed out and (looks at Troy) little Buchanan here didn’t like it too much.”
“I’ll take it from here, Dr. McGiver, thank you.”
Troy looks over at Nora for a moment and walks out the door, finally letting go, giving in to the fact that she’s gone, and that he threw away the best thing in his life.
“Nora, we’ve already discussed the risk associated with this pregnancy and if you want to carry this baby to term, and don’t want a repeat of Matthew’s birth, then you have to work on staying calm and stress free. Now tell me what brought this on?”
“Bo—Bo was (fights back her tears) he was shot last night, and then this morning his—his heart stopped. I went a little crazy when; well let’s just say someone from my past was working on Bo. He hasn’t come out of it yet, like they said he would, something about a bump on the head.”
“Nora, I am truly sorry about Bo, I am and I don’t want to sound cold-hearted, but you need to relax, if you don’t I’m going to have to admit you.”
“No, I swear I’ll do everything I have to, to insure this baby makes it. I can’t lose her. She’s proof that when you love someone as much as Bo and I love each other, nothing that life throws at you can stop you from finding your heart again, nothing. She’s a miracle.”
“She..?”
Nora smiles and shrugs her shoulders “I just have a feeling.”
“Well the cramping has stopped and you’re not bleeding so for NOW I’m going to allow you to go back and sit with Bo. But you make sure you take it easy.”
“I promise.”
Nora walked back into Bo’s room and sat down on the bed beside him. She laid his hand on her stomach.
“Come on, Commish. I have something I have to tell you. Wake up, please wake up. I need to see those eyes. You know you really shouldn’t do this to me. I’m supposed to be living a stress free existence. We’re supposed to be celebrating Valentine’s Day, and I think there was something you were supposed to ask me tonight Buchanan, so you better wake up soon so I can give you my answer. (she pauses for a moment and looks down at their hands resting on her stomach. She sighs as a feeling of warmth rushes over her.) I can’t believe we’re having another baby, Bo. And this time things will be the way they were supposed to be with Matthew. We’ve been given a second chance here Bo. Please wake up and enjoy it with me. Please. I’ve been telling the baby all about you and her brother. You know for some reason I think this baby is going to be a little girl…..”
“And if she’s as half as beautiful as you are she’ll be a knock out, and God I hope the answers yes.”
Nora smiles as a tear slowly falls. “You’re back, and yes the answer’s yes.”
Smiling that Bo Buchanan smile. “Yeah, I’m back…and you’ve just made me the happiest man alive”
“Alive…I like the sound of that.”
“So do I, honey. So do I.”
Nora reaches out and pulls him into a passionate kiss. She lays her head on his shoulder and they both fall asleep. His hand still intertwined with hers, lying on her stomach.
